Many folks and search engines mistakenly consider minitrucks to be KEI TRUCKS only. I think, technically, minitrucks are actually small pick-up trucks and mini SUVs which would include kei trucks, but is not exclusively about kei trucks. It bothers me that search engines prioritize kei truck results for minitruck searches, like anyone seeking to contribute to, or garner info from “minitruck forums” and searching for that minitruck forums terminology. Do y’all think current search results confusing to readers who are really searching small pick-up trucks and mini SUV stuff? They don’t want to see JDM stuff only. They want to see mini stuff, not just kei stuff. Aaaaargh!

Minitrucks to me are like old Toyota Hilux pickups and Geo Tracker SUVs.

Right here on this site you can find the definition of a kei truck. “The largest a kei truck can be is 134″ long, 58″ wide, and 79″ tall, with up to 660cc engines.” Kei cars and trucks are basically just Japanese small, street legal cars, vans, and service trucks. I guess that means “kei” is a subset of minitrucks and of JDM trucks. Kei = “micro”, which is smaller than “mini”!

Yeah, it’s confusing to me too. What does KEI even mean? Is it the same as JDM? How did those trucks get mixed up with minitrucks?

Not really the same as JDM, but they did start out as Japanese vehicles. KEI are wise, micro vehicles in the Japanese market. JDM is any vehicle in the Japanese Domestic Market, which is much more than just KEI cars.

Yeah, for sure, I like the old school, customized, miitruck pickups like Minitruck Era Magazine posts on IG. They don’t have to be custom, i just like the small trucks. https://www.instagram.com/p/CtF3Sdkrgwj/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

I asked ChatGPT A.I. what a minitruck is, and it responded with a definition of a kei truck or a micro truck from Japan, to which I replied:

“That is not 100% true. Minitrucks are actually small pickup trucks and mini SUVs. KEI is just a subset of that.”

So, ChatGPT apologized and admitted that I am correct. ChatGPT expanded on its first definition with this quoted further explanation, the “term “minitruck” can be used more broadly to refer to small pickup trucks and mini SUVs in addition to the specific category of kei trucks.”

“In a broader sense, minitrucks can encompass various small-sized trucks and SUVs designed for light-duty applications. These vehicles typically have compact dimensions, smaller cargo beds, and are often more fuel-efficient compared to full-sized trucks. They are commonly used for tasks such as light hauling, recreational purposes, and off-road adventures.”

“While kei trucks are a specific type of minitruck, characterized by their adherence to the kei vehicle regulations in Japan, minitrucks outside of Japan can have larger engine displacements and may not adhere to the same size limitations.”

“Thank you for pointing out the clarification, and I apologize for any misunderstanding caused by my previous response.”
